😐 It flatlined this past week

Hi friends,

Markets continue to run sideways as earnings start to cool off.

The last 5-day open to close results in major indices are:

  • Dow Jones 30: 33,874.85 (-0.50%, year-to-date: 10.68%)

  • S&P 500: 4,181.17 (0.02%, year-to-date: 11.32%)

  • Nasdaq: 13,962.68 (-0.39%, year-to-date: 8.34%)

Rewarding investors

Following a bout of earnings sessions in the last weeks, several companies made an increase to their stock dividends. Companies such as Apple (AAPL), International Business Machines (IBM), Raytheon Technologies (RTX), Kellogg (K), and Chevron (CVX) made announcements to increase their dividends. Don't spend all those dividends in one place. If you wanna check out when the next ex-div dates are, go to www.nasdaq.com for dividend schedules of your favorite companies!

Vaccine injections gives you...cash injections?

West Virginian Governor Jim Justice is giving away $100 in savings bonds for eligible people to get vaccinated in an effort to motivate people to take their medicine. What an incentive!

Cryptocurrency getting a swift kick in the jewels

Following a session of tumult, cryptocurrency seems to be getting a lot of hate in the last week, with Turkey banning the use of cryptocurrency for payments and Warren Buffet and Charlie Munger taking another jab at crypto, predicting its eventual face plant and even resorting to name calling. Sheesh; what did dogecoin ever do to you?

Future Earnings

Nothing big in the next week but here's a couple of notable earnings in the next 2-3 weeks:

  • The Walt Disney Company (DIS) on 13th May 2021

  • Home Depot (HD) on 18th May 2021

  • Walmart (WMT) on 18th May 2021

Disney (DIS)

It'll be interesting to see how Disney fares in this quarter's earnings report. On the one hand, their parks are hard-hit from the pandemic, with parks starting to opening up to reservations for the next few months. On the other hand, Disney+ has been making bank. It pays to have multiple massive revenue streams.

Annual Top-Line Revenue:

  • 2016: $55.37B

  • 2017: $54.94B

  • 2018: $59.47B

  • 2019: $69.42B

  • 2020: $65.13B

Last 4 Earnings Result (from most recent):

  • Beat

  • Beat

  • Beat

  • Miss

Historical Stock Returns:

  • 3-month: 8.89%

  • 1-year: 74.9%

  • 5-year: 80.08%

The breakout from the last earnings report showed investor optimism. The next breakout, if results are promising, should result in long-term consideration for investors.

Who competes with DIS?

Disney competes with many companies on several fronts. Some being Viacom (VIAC) and Comcast (CMCSA), and others (on the streaming side of things) being Netflix (NFLX), and Roku (ROKU).
