🏦 Battle of the Banks 🏦

Updated: Jan 28, 2021

Hi friends,

Just when you think the upward trend is about to stop, it keeps pushing the limits. We reached record highs again in all indices, lifting the year-to-date again as well.

All kidding aside, discipline and patience is good. Here's where we left off on 1/8/2021 in the 5 day change along with the current year-to-date:

  • Dow Jones 30: 31,097.97 (1.61%, year-to-date: 1.61%)

  • S&P 500: 3,824.68 (1.83%, year-to-date: 1.83%)

  • Nasdaq: 13,201.98 (2.43%, year-to-date: 2.43%)

Here's earnings for the upcoming week:

  • INFO (13th Jan 2021)

  • BLK (14th Jan 2021)

  • DAL (14th Jan 2021)

  • FRC (14th Jan 2021)

  • C (15th Jan 2021)

  • CCL (15th Jan 2021)

  • JPM (15th Jan 2021)

  • PNC (15th Jan 2021)

  • WFC (15th Jan 2021)

JP Morgan Chase (JPM)

I don't think JPM needs much introduction. Banks have been a part of major indices for a long time and JPM is by far, not an exception.

Annual Top-Line Revenue:

  • 2015: $50.97B

  • 2016: $55.9B

  • 2017: $64.37B

  • 2018: $76.1B

  • 2019: $84.04B

Last 4 Earnings Result:

  • Beat

Historical Stock Returns:

  • 3-month: 34.54%

  • 1-year: -0.87%

  • 5-year: 131.21%

Performance seems pretty par of the course when we're talking about banking. If you absolutely insist on having financial services as a sector in your portfolio for diversification purposes, JPM isn't the only one, but should at least be near the top of the list being one of the largest financial institutions in the world. In addition, there's a few other banks reporting earnings this week (see WFC, FRC, PNC).

Who's in the same space as JP Morgan Chase?

Pretty much every publicly traded company providing banking services is in competition (e.g., Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs, HSBC, Bank of America, just to name a few) with JPM.
